Knowing God by Name
Names in Biblical times were very important, they revealed a person's character. As we read through Scripture we can see the many different names of God, therefore it should be a priority in our lives to learn the Names of God.
He has been given many Names and each reveals Him in a different way. God's Names represent His attributes, His nature, and His different characteristics.
Elohim = “GOD” - The Hebrew word El-Ohim means “God who creates“, “creative or governing power” (Divine activity) . The root of Elohim is El (el). The form elohim is a plural form commonly understood as a plural of majesty. The word Elohim appears 2,570 times in Scripture.
As in Genesis 1 ‘In the beginning God”, the opening statement contains the word Elohim, and is used 32 times in the first chapter of Genesis alone.
Another meaning also is “The power and glory of His being”. although the word Elohim is Singular in that it describes God as one being, it is also plural in the sense that the Godhead is represented also (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) Gen. 1:26, "And God said, Let us make man in our image“.
Deuteronomy 32:39 - says Now see that I, even I, am He, and there is no God besides Me.
El-Elyon = “Most High God” - In Gen. 14:18, the phrase "the most high God" is El Elyon, meaning simply "highest". El Elyon is God the Highest.
As "possessor of heaven and earth," the most high God has and exercises authority in both spheres, as in Genesis 14;22 Abram said I have lifted up my hand unto the Lord, the most high God [El Elyon], the possessor of heaven and earth,
Psalm 57:2 says I will cry out to God Most High, to God who performs all things for me.
Psalm 91:1 - He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High,
Jehovah (Yahweh) = “LORD” - Meaning ‘Self-existent one” . LORD with all capital letters means that this is the proper or covenant name for God.
Derived from the Hebrew word “Havah” which means “To Be” or ‘Being”, “To Live” or “Life”.
It appears 6,823 times in Scripture. He is Jehovah, LORD “Eternal and Unchangeable”.
In Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM, thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.
Malachi 3:6 - For I am the Lord, I do not change.
El-Shaddai = “God Almighty” - Hebrew meaning for “Shaddai” is “Almighty” or “Mighty One”. it is also translated in Scripture as ‘Breast (Shad) meaning “One who Nourishes“, “Supplies“, “Satisfies“. In Genesis 17 God said to Abram “ I am Almighty God, And I will make my covenant between Me and you”
El-Shaddia also means One who pours out Blessings, Makes fruitful, All sufficient and Bountiful. Bestower of gifts.
“El-Shaddai” appears over 48 times in the Old Testament, (31 times alone in the book of Job).
Psalm 91:1 - Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty
Ephesians 3:20 - Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.
Adonai = “Lord” - With only the first letter in “Lord” capitalized, It refers to a “Master”, “Sir” or “Lord”. meaning that God is our Master, Lord, Owner, Possessor and Father.
Found over 300 times in the Old Testament, Mostly throughout the book of Psalms, the word Adonai is translated as “Lord”. referring to the Lordship that God has over the believers life, it also is translated as “Master”, showing the dominion He has over us as His servants.
Adonai has a singular meaning as well as a plural meaning used in context with earthly Kings and Priests.
Romans 8:15 - But you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father”
Jehovah Jireh = ‘The Lord will Provide” - the Name “Jireh” was memorialized by Abraham when God provided a ram to be sacrificed in place of Isaac.
In Genesis 22;14 Abraham called the name of the place, “The-Lord-Will-Provide” as it is said to this day, in the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.
Philippians 4:19 - And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Jehovah Rophe = “The Lord who heals” - It is God who heals us spiritually, emotionally as well as physically, God heals body, soul and spirit; all levels of man's being. Exodus 15:26 ‘For I am the Lord who heals you”
Jeremiah 30:17 - For I will restore health to you, and heal you of your wounds.
Isaiah 53:5 “And by His stripes we are healed”
Jehovah Nissi = “The Lord our banner” - This name commemorates the desert victory Israel had over the Amalekites, meaning: “to Lift up” Exodus 17:15 - And Moses built an alter and called its name “The-Lord-is-My-banner”.
Isaiah 54;17 - No weapon formed against you shall prosper
Isaiah 59:19 - When the enemy comes in, like a flood the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.
Jehovah M’Kaddesh = ‘The Lord who sanctifies” - God makes it clear that He alone, Not law, can cleanse His people. Leviticus 20:8 - And you shall keep my statutes and perform them, I am the Lord who Sanctifies you.
1 Peter 1:16 - “Be holy for I am holy”
Ezekiel 37:28 - The nations also will know that I, the LORD, sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forevermore
Jehovah Shalom = “The Lord our peace” - The name given by Gideon to the alter he had built after the Angel of the Lord assured him he would not die. Judges 6:24 -So Gideon built an alter there to the Lord and called it, The-Lord-is-Peace.
Ephesians 2:14 - “For He Himself is our Peace”
Colossians 1:20 - And by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
Jehovah Tsidkenu = “The Lord our Righteousness” - God alone provides righteousness to man, Jeremiah 23:5 - Now this is His name by which He will be called, The Lord Our Righteousness.
2 Corinthians 5:21 - For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Romans 3:25 - whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness
Jehovah Rohi = “The Lord our Shepard” - David realized that God was the Shepherd to pasture the sheep. Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.
John 10:11 - “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep”.
Isaiah 40:11 - He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm,
Jehovah Shammah = “The Lord is There” - The name given to Jerusalem and the temple there. Indicating that the once departed glory had returned, Ezekiel 48:35 - “And the name of that city from that day shall be The Lord is There.”
Hebrews 9:24 - For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;
Hebrews 13:5 - “For He Himself has said, I will never leave you, nor forsake you.
*Also “Emmanuel” = God is with us.
Jehovah Sabaoth = “Lord of Hosts” - The commander of the angelic host and the armies of God, earthly and heavenly! Isaiah 1:24 - Therefore the Lord says, The Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, “ Ah, I will rid Myself of My adversaries, And take vengeance on My enemies.
Psalm 48:7 - The Lord of Hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Jeremiah 11:20 - But, O LORD of hosts, You who judge righteously, Testing the mind and the heart, Let me see Your vengeance on them, For to You I have revealed my cause.
