HOLY THURSDAY DEVOTIONAL
Hi Everyone,
I am writing today on the events that took place on Holy Thursday. Many People think about the Last Supper which was actually the Passover Sadder, when Jesus took the cup and broke it for the first communion. Some may think about how Jesus sweats blood and tears at Gethsemane praying for the cup to be removed from him. Well, Jesus prayed for more than just the cup to be removed that night. Jesus prayed for you and me. Jesus knew the reason he came to earth and knew that the cup was not going to be removed from him. See John 12:27.
In the Gospel of John chapter 17 John tells us what Jesus prayed at Gethsemane. Jesus took Peter, James and John with him that night and left them to pray amongst themselves while he went to pray solitarily. There are 26 verses in this chapter so for the sake of time I'm going to summarize. But please read John Chapter 17 this Holy Thursday and read and pray as if you were with Jesus at Gethsemane.
Ø Jesus prayed for Himself to be glorified and to be restored to his position in Heaven.
After Praying this for an hour it says in Mathew 26:40 it states, 40Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak
Ø Jesus then went back and prayed for his Disciples who were about to start their ministry of the Great Commission
After praying this second prayer Mathew tells us in Ch. 26:43 43When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
Ø Jesus knew his time was short and didn’t wake them up this time. Instead He went back a third time and acknowledged that if the cup would not be taken away then let God's will be done and then Jesus Prayed for you and me. The future believers. In John 17:20. After praying the third time he woke them up saying that the hour has come and it was time for him to be arrested. As we see in Mathew 26: 4747While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
This devotional is about how important it is to pray and be in the spirit daily. I think Holy Thursday should be a day to Eat and not fast because Jesus ate the last supper on that day. But at the same time it should be a reverent day of prayer. Jesus signaled out Peer for a reason and said to pray for the spirit is willing but the flesh is week, Jesus knew what was about to happen. Peter did not pray and was in his flesh so he reacted in a carnal way when they came to arrest Jesus. Peter cut off the ear of the servant of the High Priest. Jesus then gave the wisest words to anyone who fights fire with fire. Jesus said, He who lives by the sword dies by the sword.
Brothers and sisters,. By walking in our carnal mindset and not the spirit can also hinder us from hearing God’s voice in answer to prayers we have already brought before His thrown. Jesus said nobody fasts when the bridegroom is with him therefore, I think this Holy Thursday we should eat our favorite meal as if Jesus was at the table sitting with you feasting. .However, let's spend the day engulfed in prayer. Let’s not sleep the way Peter did, but pray for our loved ones and the unbelievers as Jesus did. Read John's Record of the prayers in John 17. After all Jesus was praying for me and you the future of the church
John 17:20
I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22I have given them the glory that you gave me that they may be one as we are one: 23I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
Thank you and I hope you were blessed by this message.
