Recently, while sitting in a doctor's office, I overheard a little girl ask her grandma, “Grandma, are you going to get me something for my birthday?”, and I was shocked by Grandma's response. Her grandma replied, “Well, now that depends.... Have you been a good little girl this year?” Since when does a gift have strings attached?! A gift by definition is FREE and, if you gotta do something good to get it, it's not a gift. It's a REWARD!
Unfortunately, Grandma's logic isn't uncommon. It's a boldface lie from the pit of Hell and has been greatly promoted by what I call the “Santa doctrine”. Every year at Christmastime we brainwash our children with songs like “Santa Clause is Coming to Town”. Have you ever really listened to the words of that song? In essence, it's saying that only good little boys and good little girls get presents (gifts) under the tree, and that bad boys and girls get absolutely nothing! I'm so glad I didn't have to be a “good little boy” to receive God's free gift of salvation. If being good was required, I'd be in a heap of trouble.... and so would you.
“There is none that doeth good, no, not one.” (Psalms 14:3)
“All we like sheep have gone astray...” (Isaiah 53:6)
“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
(Romans 3:23)
“The wages of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
The “wage” is what we've earned – it's what we deserve – but the GIFT is what God freely gives us, and the reason He's able to do this is because Jesus suffered our death at the cross. It was His precious blood that purchased this GIFT and now it's ours for the asking. The Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved...” (Acts 16:31)
To suggest we have to do anything else to be saved, besides just believe, is an insult to God. Whether it be baptism, consecration, or whatever, to place any other condition on salvation is an abomination to God. Those who would teach such things – who would place other conditions on salvation – are, in effect, saying that the blood of Jesus isn't enough.
