Hello

My name is Michele. I have a Chiari Malformation with a Syrinx. In Arnold-Chiari malformation, the posterior fossa does not form properly. Because the posterior fossa is small, the brain stem, cerebellum, or cerebellar brain tissues (called the cerebellar tonsils) are squeezed downward through an opening at the bottom of the skull. The cerebellum and/or the brain stem may extend beyond the skull or protrude into the spinal column. The displaced tissues may obstruct the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the substance that flows around the brain and spinal cord. CSF nourishes the brain and spinal cord (Answers.com). A chronic disease of the spinal cord characterized by the presence of fluid-filled cavities and leading to spasticity and sensory disturbances (Answers.com). My Chiari has also led to my brainstem being compressed slowing down the blood flow to my brain. I am also a cancer survivor. I had Non Hodgekins Lymphoma 9 years ago. The cancer treatments that I had at that time left me with scar tissue on the back of my heart and in my lungs.
I have several symptoms. The most troublesome are seizure like episodes, fatigue, short term memory loss, and chronic pain.

A car hit me when I was 11 1/2, I'm 56 now, and put me in a coma for four almost 5 month, I lost just about everything I had and had to relearn most everything. Now I am once again losing abilities due to age and post polio syndrome. When the car hit me it fractured my skull but there was no brain damage, for I have completed my education having graduated from college. When I woke up I was a complete aphasiac, but now I get into trouble for running my mouth. :-)

At first I was wheel chair bound but eventually graduated to two under-the-arm crutches, then to a half crutch, to a cane, to nothing, but due to age it's back to a cane except at home where I'm a furniture walker. Ain't God good!
