As a Christian, we are called to go out into the world and preach the Gospel. Preaching can be speaking, showing, and giving about Jesus, the "High Priest of our Profession/Confession" (Hebrews 4:14). Our "profession" is translated into our "confession". I will say that our lives and what we do and what we represent is our "confession" of who we are. We live in this world, but we are warned not to take on the appearance and way of life as the world.

All of us live in a secular world, and we have opportunities to demonstrate to a secular world just how great God is, and the gift that his Son gives to us. We can not separate ourselves from living in the secular world, but we can sure show this world the amazing gifts and opportunities that God gives His Children..now that comes with responsibilities. We can be actors, actresses, musicians, dancers, business people, attorneys, and other professions, but what does our work say about us as a Child of God? Being a Christian comes before anything else that we are. If we are a "career" first, then we deny God and we deny our saved lives. If we are a Christian first, then that lifestyle will show up bright in our secular profession, and we will actually glorify God amongst others who do not know the Son.

Yes, Christians can make films, we can act, and can perform music that may not be considered in the standard Christian genre, but our works are to be filled with the glorification of God, because that is who we are as saved souls of Christ. That is our identity, which is stronger than anything else we are born with or become. A good example is that the work that I do will also be used to support social causes dealing with poverty, or any work of art/performance that I do will present the image that God says me must present as his Child...I may not always have a choir behind me, but there will be a message of hope in life that my God has given me, even if the performance or work display hardships...there will always be a light of God in there to do "right", and to live "his life".

That is who and what we are as Christians living and working in a secular world.

Dawn,

As a former youth pastor of 8 years and now in the film and music business, I have plenty of thoughts to share with you.

Here are just a few:

1. Pray. The Christian entertainment industry as a whole is not that far removed unfortunately from the secular entertainment industry. The same temptations that affect secular media professionals affect Christian ones.

2. Encourage your son to attend a school, or attach himself to a company that has a solid theological foundation. There are so many false teachers and prophets out there and you must use discretion.

3. Accountability. Does he have someone who he completely trusts that he can be accountable to and with? Especially if he is moving away from home, this is important.

4. Grounded. Wherever he may end up, encourage him to not only attend, but become INVOLVED in his local church. For a singer there are plenty of opportunities and it will bless him, and the church he attends. Not only that, it might open some doors for him.

5. Contracts. If you have a friend or family member who is an attorney, have them take a look at any contract BEFORE he signs. Even in the Christian media world, there are some shady types who will take advantage of a young man.

Hopefully that helps a little. Feel free to ask any specific questions you may have.

In His Majesty's service,

Eric
