I just wanted to know how do people know what gifts they may have. I know that you can have a calling on your life, is that also a spiritual gift. Can you pray for a gift...I am just curious.

Rom 12:6-9 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

1Co 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
1Co 12:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
1Co 12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

I don't see anywhere in the Bible that gives a certain order you will recieve any gifts, they are listed and there are those deemed as the "greater" gift that we should eagerly desire. This passage seems to show an order of how the gifts are to be used in the body or church:
1Co 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

And the purpose seems to always be the edification of the church!
1Co 14:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

I don't think your gift is necessarily your calling but it can be, God will give us all the tools we need to accomplish His will, so if it's one gift or two or all of them when the time comes He will provide. I think the biggest thing is to not seek the gift but to seek the giver and trust the gifts will come.
Heather, I think the last part of your comment sums it up... that God will provide the tools for what he is calling us to do for the kingdom. I want God to give me the gift of discernment, where I can use spiritual eyes because that is so important especially when working in ministry.
You are absolutely right, and I think that if you desire discernment then you should ask for it. God may or may not give it to you, that is up to Him and I cannot say either way. But what I can say is that every good gift is from the Father. Seek Him sister and let Him point the way and provide as He knows what you will need!
There are gifts of grace, such as teaching and exhorting. Inward abilities of life that enables one to minister to others (Rom. 12:7 & 8). And, there are miraculous gifts, outward endowments, such as speaking in tongues and healing. In 1 Corinthians 12, Brother Paul hear deals with yet, another problem among the Corinthians, the problem of spiritual gifts in relation to God's administration and operation. According to the context of this book, in verse 8, "For to one through the Spirit a word of wisdom is given, and to another a word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;" the word of wisdom is the word concerning Christ as the deeper things of God, predestined by God to be our portion (1:24, 30; 2:6-10). The word of knowledge is the word that imparts a general knowledge of things concerning God and the Lord (8:1-7). The word of wisdom is mainly out of our spirit through revelation; the word of knowledge is mainly out of our understanding through teaching. The former is deeper that the latter. However, both of these, not speaking in tongues nor any other miraculous gift, are listed as the first gifts and the topmost manifestation of the Spirit because both are for (as Sister Heather did so state), the edification of the saints and the building up of the church to carry out God's operation. I will again, suggest that you speak with an elder for guidance with this information. Sorry, I cannot help you, I'm new at this, and I'm only 21, with 27 years experience. Brother Levi ;-)
Spiritual Gifts in a nutshell, better equip us as Christians for the work of saving souls.
We are not told anywhere in the Bible that there is a certain order in receiving them but, We are told the church is like a body. We all use our diverse gifts together to become a powerful witness to the world. (CHRIST'S CHURCH)

"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ" 1 Cor 12:12 =]]
i'll be honest after reading all of this the best answer lie's in the bible itself better yet in the lord god allmighty in jesus christ look into (Matthew 21)18-22
18 In the morning, as Jesus was returning to Jerusalem, he was hungry, 19 and he noticed a fig tree beside the road. He went over to see if there were any figs, but there were only leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” And immediately the fig tree withered up.
20 The disciples were amazed when they saw this and asked, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”

21 Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. 22 You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.”

p.s. i love you in christ jesus where everything is possible according to our mighty fathers will amen
