Jesus Blog: Is it Wrong to Celebrate Christmas? Christmas=God's Day or Devil's Day?

I've been seeing a lot of negative comments from 'Anti-Christmas' Christians. They say that since Christmas started off as a pagan celebration, it's a sin to celebrate it today. When Jesus' birth is brought up the rebuttal is that there's no evidence Jesus was born on December 25th! In this article I will explain why this logic is completely flawed...

Argument: Christians shouldn't celebrate a day that has pagan roots
This argument is contradictory because there are many everyday things that people say or do today that has pagan roots. The modern calendar we all use today derived from paganism, so does that mean everyone who has a calendar is pagan? I think not!

Origin of our days and months:

Days of the week:
The First Day: Sunday was named after the Sun god.
The second Day: Monday was named after the moon goddess.
The Third Day: Tuesday was named after the god Tyr.
The Fourth Day: Wednesday was named after the god Odin.
The Fifth Day: Thursday was named after the god Thor.
The Sixth Day: Friday was named after the goddess Frigga.
The Seventh Day: Saturday was named after the god Saturn.

Months:
JANUARY:
Named for Janus, the Roman mighty one of portals and patron of beginnings and endings, to whom this month was sacred. He is shown as having two faces, one in front, the other at the back of his head, supposedly to symbolize his powers.
FEBRUARY:
This name is derived from Februa, a Roman festival of purification. It was originally the month of expiation.
MARCH:
It is named for Mars, the Roman mighty one of war.
APRIL:
This name comes from the Latin APRILIS, indicating a time of Fertility. It was believed that this month is the month when the earth was supposed to open up for the plants to grow.
MAY:
This month was named for Maia, the Roman female deity of growth or increase.
JUNE:
This name is sometimes attributed to June, the female mighty one of the marriage, the wife of Jupiter in Roman mythology. She was also called the "Queen of heaven" and " Queen of mighty ones." The name of this month is also attributed to Junius Brutus, but originally it most probably referred to the month in which crops grow to ripeness.
JULY:
Named for the Roman emperor Julius Caesar, this is the seventh month of the Gregorian year.
AUGUST:
Named for Octavius Augustus Caesar, emperor of Rome; the name was originally from augure, which means, "to increase."
SEPTEMBER:
This name is derived from the Latin septem, meaning "seven."
OCTOBER
This name comes from the Latin root octo, meaning "eight."
NOVEMBER:
This name is derived from Latin novem, meaning "ninth."
DECEMBER:
This name is derived from the Latin decem, meaning "ten."

If the argument that you are pagan if you celebrate Christmas because of its history is logical, this would mean that anyone who owns a calendar, or mentions the days of the week is pagan! Does this sound logical to you?! It sounds ridiculous to me...

But what is definitely a 'sinful' thing to do during Christmas time is to chastise and condemn other believers for choosing to celebrate Jesus' birth. Oh don't worry, this isn't just my opinion, here it is straight from God's Word to prove it:

"One man considers one day is more holy than another, while others think every day is alike. Each person should be fully convinced in his own mind. Those who have a special day for worshiping the Lord are trying to honor Him. Those who eat all kinds of food do so to honor the Lord, since they give thanks to God before eating. And those who won't eat everything also want to please the Lord and give thanks to God. For we are not our own masters when we live or we die. While we live,we live to please the Lord. And when we die,we go to be with the Lord.

Christ died and rose again for this very purpose,so that He might be Lord of those who are alive and of those who have died. So why do you condemn another believer? Why do you look down on your brother? Remember, each of us will stand personally before the judgment seat of God."

-Romans 14:5-10

Is Christmas the devil's day or God's day? The reality is that every day belongs to God. Yahweh is Creator of the heavens and the earth! God created and sustains each day, so Christmas is absolutely God's day!

I do believe Christmas is not the season on the day, months, or years we celebrate. Everyday is a Christmas which it describe as the time of giving, sharing, and loving. The book of psalms tells us that, if there is a reason to celebrate then celebrate. Just be sure who is the reason to celebrate. It's not the tradition, culture that we have we celebrate it but its the time we can gave back for all the blessing God give us. Like in America they celebrate thanksgiving not because of tradition but because there is a reason to celebrate. Does celebrating Christmas is wrong? Definitely NO!! But the origin is pagan? Well, then celebrate the kind of celebration which pleases God not the pagans way of celebration but God's intended celebration. Make sure what is your purpose of these celebration and the focus of it.
