We cannot fully understand or comprehend God because he is so much greater than us. Yet, with our limited human intellects, we can know him, and we can apprehend his incredible and unlimited greatness, perfection, justice, righteousness, mercy and love from the things that he has done. We should never for a moment think that we have God figured out, to put limitations on him, to substitute our judgment for his, or to misinterpret his motives because they might seem alien to us.
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways. And My thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55.8-9).
"He does great things beyond our understanding" (Job 37.5).
"He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted" (Job 5.9).
"Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?" (Job 11.7)
"The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power; in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress" (Job 37.23).
"By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible" (Hebrews 11.13).
"Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made" (John 1.3).
"No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began" (1 Corinthians 2.7).
"How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts!" (Psalm 92.5)
"Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom" (Psalm 145.3).
"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end" (Ecclesiastes 3.11).
"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom" (Isaiah 40.28).
"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!" (Romans 11.33).
"But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe" (Hebrews 1.2).

Permalink Reply by Debbie_LIBAW on February 20, 2012 at 10:38am Hmmm..I notice that four of these scriptures come from Job. Pretty cool that a man who suffered more than I could ever imagine would have the humility to acknowledge that God knew more than he did.
It's no coincidence that I happened to choose several verses from the OT Book of Job. I love the Book of Job! In Job's life story there's a critical lesson for all of us to learn about humility and submission to God, and placing our trust in his will and purpose.
Few (if any) of us have suffered more than Job of the Old Testament. He lived in sheer agony and unrelenting pain for months with open sores all over his body, he became loathsome to his wife, repugnant to others, and lost his wealth. Yet, in spite of his incredible misery and suffering, his faith in our Lord was unwavering and resolute.
Through his trials, Job was humbled and brought to submission by God. Eventually, he would be healed and blessed by God and his friends and family welcomed him again.
Job came to realize (as we should as well) that it wasn't his place to question God's ways or wisdom or to presume that God acts in arbitrary or irrational ways. On the contrary, God's nature and ways are far beyond the limited capability of our human intellects to comprehend. The Lord has a purpose for everything he does, and that he is good, just and faithful. Indeed, he promises us this: "God withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly" (Psalm 84.11).
Preach, Colby!
