Deuteronomy 4:31 (KJV)

(For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he swore unto them.

God, who is way more merciful than we deserve, remembers us in our miserable state and promises not to destroy us.  Thanks to the prayers of the generations before us, He allows our legacy to continue, as long as we keep serving Him.
