Wow. Deep questions here. I've gotta go research the correct responses to this. Maybe Colby or Heather will let me off the hook by answering first. lol. And yes, your questions do make sense.

Hi Amy,  I thought I'd share the Word of God with you on this question you have about praying "in Jesus name" and "in the Spirit."

When you have accepted Christ as your Savior you receive the Holy Spirit within you, therefore whenever you pray. you ARE praying in the Spirit.  Non-Believer can NOT pray in the Spirit because they do NOT have the Spirit of God in them.
" Know you not that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?"  I Corinthians 3:16

" And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that
spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world."  1 John 4:3

As far as I understand you can use any of His names...as long as it is in "Jesus' name" that we come to the Father.

"Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;"  Ephesians 5:20
"And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."  Colossians 3:17
Our prayers should be addressed to God the Father as Jesus instructed in Matt. 6:9, "After this manner therefore pray ye:  Our Father which art in heaven Hallowed be thy name"  We close our prayers in "Jesus' name."  In closing a prayer a Christian is recognizing that Jesus Christ is our Savior and "advocate" between us and God the Father.
"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One."  I John 2:1

Hope this helps you :)
Yours sister in Christ,
Jackie

I just wanted to add a little to Jackie's reply. First, what does it mean to pray by means of, or “in, the Holy Spirit”? It means to pray in the “sphere of”praying along the same lines, about the same things, in the same name as the Holy Spirit. We are to pray the same thing that the Holy Spirit is praying. The reason that these kinds of prayers are guaranteed to be answered is because we are praying the same prayer that He prays. When we are not doing so, then our prayers may not be answered. Amen to Jackie's reply about praying in the Name.

Another role of the Holy Spirit is that the Holy Spirit prays for and with us. Romans 8:26–27 states that the Holy Spirit prays in order to help our infirmities. The Greek word for “help” is used only here and in Luke 10:40. It means practical help. The Holy Spirit gives practical help in our prayer life.

The problem is that: we know not how to pray as we ought. The solution is that: the Spirit [of God] makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered (Rom. 8:26).
The result is that: he [the Father] that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit. The Father always answers the prayers of the Holy Spirit. The reason for the answer is because: [the Spirit himself] makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God (Rom. 8:27).
Galatians 4:6 also teaches that: God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
The Holy Spirit is praying for us and with us.
We will not ask God to do that which He chooses not to do. The second implication is that the opposite of praying in the Spirit is praying in the flesh.

Tammy, you did a great job explaining about "praying in the Spirit" and thanks for the reference too.  I guess I just got wrapped up in "praying in Jesus name,"  that I didn't complete the rest of the question.

Sure hope this helps Amy in understanding both these difficult issues in scripture.

You ladies are awesome, I SO appreciate you!

Hope it can help you bro!!!

Amen!! Amy, God bless you as you seek to know Him better

If you want to know about praying in the Spirit then pray this prayer taken from Eph. 3:17 and personalize it with your name and personal pronouns. remember you are praying this prayer right now to God, talking directly to Him right now, not reading about a prayer someone else prayed once upon a time, it's now and it's your prayer to Him asking for wisdom which He has promised that He will give liberally and with gladness.

Eph 1:17-2317 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.KJV

then start studying these scriptures. Pray this prayer prior to your study sessions and have teachable spirit. If you want to know the Holy Spirit will reveal it to you but must really desire to be taught of Him. The Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth.

 Matt 3:5, Luke 3:16, Acts2:3, I Co. 12-14
