I've been wondering about something for quite some time now.
Proverbs 11:10
When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices;
when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
Proverbs 16:7
When a man's ways are pleasing to the LORD,
He makes even his enemies live at peace with him.
Proverbs 29:2
When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice;
when the wicked rule, the people groan.
Matthew 5:11
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Luke 6:22
Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
Luke 6:26
Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.
John 15:18-19
18) If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19) If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
There's a strange dychotomy here with these verses. On the one hand, we have Solomon telling us that living a godly life will cause others to rejoice, and even our enemies will live peacefully with us. Yet, Jesus reminds His followers that people will hate us for following Him. So how does this work?
The reason why I ask is because I don't know of anybody who hates me. In fact, I know of a lot of people, many of them are not believers, who have a great deal of respect for me. Especially in regard to my faith. If anything, those individuals who know me best, know that my faith is uncompromising. And they certainly respect me for it, even if they don't believe or agree with my convictions.
So, am I doing something right? Or am I doing something horribly wrong?
